Small-scale fundraising can be accomplished without the overhead of an actual non-profit charity. One-off or annual fundraising can be done without a staff, a lot of time, or an established social media presence. With a small group of volunteers you can have a successful fundraiser if you are focused and resourceful.

According to, online giving grew 7.9% in 2016 and online giving has also seen growth year after year. $31 billion in online fundraising is expected as a total for 2017. This is great news for non-profits as well as smaller-scale groups. Online fundraising provides an easier means for potential donors to find and engage with your fundraiser.

Starting out requires planning on who your focus is to and what your message will be. It's best to outline some things about your mission: who will want to target as donors, what you plan to communicate, and why you are raising funds. After those three items are determined you need to figure out how to advertise your fundraiser and how best to do it. Setting up a Facebook page or short-term website can help you funnel traffic toward your fundraiser. Set up some text content to describe your mission, reach out to potential sponsors, basic messages for social media posts, and rules and prizes (if you decide to do a fundraising contest).

During the actual fundraiser you'll want people to be able to see how your fundraiser is doing and be able to participate. If you plan to have a fundraiser offline you will need to secure a venue to host the event. If your fundraiser is online be sure to share the URL so people can find it to learn about your mission and donate.

You'll want to keep a few key things in mind:

  • Stay consistent in your messaging.
  • Be clear about your mission when creating content for a main page on any online fundraising website you're using.
  • Always thank your donors.
  • Provide updates on goal milestones.
  • Share the URL of your online fundraising website on social media and ask others to share it.
  • Follow through.
